Breaking the internet and new directions part 1.So I up and vanished. Being a judge for Crystal Brush, Placing 3 (!!!) medals at World Expo, Another fabulous medal at Sword and Brus, My son's first competition.... all sorts of stuff and yet nothing here. Why?

Photobucket.

All my images are hosted at a paid photobucket account. This year Photo bucket has decreed that they will no longer allow external linking unless you pay an exorbitant amount of money - Hundreds of dollars a year. I make zero dollars from this site and instead post to share and connect with my fellow painters. I cant pay $300+ a year to host photos. I also decided I wont be loading more things to their servers just to have to worry about having my photos held for ransom. So is this the end..... ?

Nah. Just need to figure out a different way :)

SO that's what I'm doing. pursuing different means of hosting and sharing images.

I have been planning/writing articles, new SBS tutorials and making some plans for how to showcase some previous tutorials that are still relevant but which many people may have lost into the depths of time and the interwebs.....

Not the end. A new beginning instead. It is coming.
So here we are at last and the project was finally done! I am pretty proud of this build. It is not perfect by any stretch but it was a lot of fun and a really new and unique experience for me. I think the finishes on the tank are great and it is a really interesting piece overall. It won Gold in Vehicle at the Sword And Brush painting competition and 1st place at the local IPMS annual competition. I hope you have enjoyed following the build and if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask!
Thanks greatly to AMMO of Mig Jimenez - this piece wouldn't have happened if not for being thoroughly inspired by the innovative range of products they create. I don't work for them (or any other hobby company) in any capacity but when I see companies like AMMO, Badger, and Happy Seppuku - people who make great things that really ADD to my hobby experience - I don't hesitate to share either! Thanks also to my buddy Trevor Howard for taking these photos for me.

This piece is also on my Putty and Paint page! Id love an extra vote if you are able :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com29tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22561953.post-44379201190648953292017-05-23T09:00:00.000-04:002017-05-23T09:29:26.489-04:00ScratchBuild Log Part 4: Painting the 1915 Curiasse "Fortin" Aubriot-Gabet
So on to the actual paint! Started with a quick shot of Stynylrez. This primer by Badger is the best I've ever used, though **SPOILER ALERT** Ammo of Mig's new one shot primer is the same formulation made by Badger for Mig!!! Partnerships are something AMMO has really been developing as of late - Alclad being another example - What a great way to get an amazing products into even more hands!!

Once primed I reached for the AMMO by Mig Jimenez French WW1/2 Camoflage Colours - a great selection of period appropriate colours, but moreso than that a key selection of skewed grey tones - the light french blue was key in this paint job. I also grabbed some VMA German Grey and some Scale Colour Nacar to do some temperature adjusted contrasting zones in the paint job. With this being essentially a monochromatic model it was important to me to use contrasts of temperature and saturation to create interest in the surface of the model. I tried to create exaggerated and interesting areas of light and accentuated form without making it look completely unbelievable. This can be a difficult line to walk in these early stages as the following filters and layers will dramatically adjust these basecoats in a variety of ways. That being said I nailed 90% of my finishes on the first try. Came back the next day and could see what I wanted to change and made it happen. One of the best starts I have ever had on a model! A quick shot of dullcoat sealed this layer in.
After a little test fitting to make sure all was still properly aligned with the base, the front wheel assembly was removed for separate painting and weathering. I started laying rust tones into the rear roller assembly and then began to apply filters and stains using AMMO of Mig Enamels. Any of my readers will know I love these products and that they have dramatically changed the way I work. Another miniature artist making awesome use of AMMO products is James Wappel - if you don't already follow his incredible mini painting exploits you really should!!!!

While the filters and streaks were drying I started on the wheels where I used a combination of actual chipping with AMMO Chipping fluid and Layers of paints, enamel rust effects washes and pigments.

I also used a graphite pencil and Forgeworld Dark Iron metallic pigment to add exposed metal marks and edges. While those were drying as well I took the Forgeworld Barbed wire and began to add it to the base as well. It really added life and interest just as I had hoped - Really pleased at this point with everything!

So with that it was time to add more marks and interest across the surface of the hull. Some painters like to refer to this as more "information". Even if (especially if?) it is subtle it really engages the viewers brain more. Sometimes it can also forward the story element by relating the piece to its environment. As this is designed to drive through barbed wire I wanted to make sure it has many little scratches across the lower hull in particular. These were painted with care and individually highlighted.

Once I had addressed surface detail and finish it was time for environmental effects - I like to think of my models in layers - Base coat and basic lighting come first. Filters and surface treatments are next. Weather/environmental factors are layered last. So I began by breaking out more of my AMMO of Mig enamels and using them to simulate a first spattering of mud - basically older dryer splashes that would have a matte finish against the slightly satin hull. I loaded up a large brush with the enamel mud and held it near the hull behind the position where the wheel would be. Using the airbrush I shot bursts of air effectively "flicking" the bristles and giving a natural distribution of spatter across the hull. This was a VERY effective way of simulating the mud and filth that would be spattered by the turning wheels in this wet landscape.

While waiting for this to dry I also attached the extension cord that ran from the back of this wild little electric vehicle back into the friendly trenches (this easily severed and unreliable power source was one of the key reasons cited in abandoning this project after building only the one prototype!). I also fit and primed the sandbags and supports and began to paint and weather them using a mix of acrylics and enamels. I wanted them to be harmonious with their muddy surroundings to be an accentuating detail rather than a secondary focal point. When finished they help lead the eye into the scene rather than drawing strong attention to themselves. Even the way they are stacked is to emphasize an upward movement pointing towards the tank.

Once the body was dry and the bags were in place I mounted the tank to the base and moved toward final harmonization - making sure it looked as though it was part of the scene and not just placed on top of it. I began by adding the next layers of dimensional mud. Made with pigment, acrylic pigment resin, paint, a little bit of gravel, static grass and some plaster this sticky mess matched the groundwork beautifully. It needed to be applied in stages, however, to build up naturally and to hold the dimension. It was really important to pay attention to the front wheels in this stage and make sure they looked partially sunk/dug in.
As the mixture was built up it was also added to the sandbags and areas of the base with additional roots and plant matter mixed into it - to keep the finish natural and to ensure harmony.

So now that I had the proto-tank built and riveted, it was time to start working on the presentation base. I started by laying out some rough ideas with scrap pieces of balsa foam and once I had a clear idea in my head I started piecing together the pieces I would actually use.

For compositional purposes I wanted to use a raised piece of groundwork that would help draw the sight lines up and that would narrow towards the wide end of the tank and be wider at the narrow back of it. this would give emphasis to the bodywork and form of the vehicle while still giving me some space to add some landscape details and points of interest. It would also give the impression of forward movement.

As a competitive modeler an a judge, I cant emphasize enough how important good composition and interesting presentation are to separate your work from the competition.

Next up I started to carve into the layers of balsa foam. I wanted to add sunken track marks that would help to emphasise the weight of this contraption as well as to reinforce the nature of WW1 Trench warfare. The Fortin was designed to help cross the muddy shell pocked no mans land - pushing its way through barbed wire and shrugging off conventional small arms fire. To the right here is a photo I took In France of a section of No Mans Land - even now a hundred years later the effects of the shelling and digging upon the landscape are frighteningly impressive.

Therefore I wanted to include: Mud, Barbed Wire, Shell damage/craters, evidence of destroyed features from before the war, and a trench line. The tracks and pockmarks were easy to dig in to the balsa foam and then I just sealed them with some PVA foam glue. I took some Bass wood and used it to make some wooden posts, debris and the core of a shattered tree trunk. I built out the rest of the tree and its roots using Super Sculpey. Finally I made some Barbed wire support pigtails like the ones I had seen when touring the battlefields of Europe out of wire.

Next I broke out the Celluclay - a strong powdered paper mache that is great for making textures. I applied a coat of it to the balsa foam to give a real churned mud texture. It also let me smooth out the seams between the layers of foam. This also allowed me to build even greater depth into the surface and imbed the tree so that it looked like it had grown out of the landscape instead of being placed on top of it. I sprinkled some additional sand, small gravel, cork debris, static grass and wooden shards and worked them into the celluclay "mud" so that it all looked cohesive and organically occurring.

With the groundwork established it was time to begin building the edge of the trench line. I wanted to include a sandbag edge like the ones seen at Vimy. I have built these before with great success for a couple projects and find that it is important to build the bags one at a time and detail each because you never can be quite sure what will show. So I treated each bag as its own little sculpture - texture, patches, stitching tears and all. Though it takes a while it is quite fun to be honest. I made sure that I kept setting aside my favorite bags from the others to become the most visible ones where possible.

I made some with apoxie sculpt and some with super sculpey.

The next steps were pretty fun. I broke out a variety of earth colored paints and powders and went to work creating as natural a finish as I could. The photos don't pick up the color variations nearly well enough but I was pretty happy with the overall result. I broke out some AMMO of Mig rust finishes (enamels and pigments) and treated the barbed wire posts as well as some Forgeworld Brass etch Barbed wire. Once the tree, all the wood and earth and scrap had been fully painted I mixed up a batch of Envirotek Lite clear resin and using a medicine dosing syringe and an old brush I added wet effects and puddles to the mud and added a little static grass in both clump/growths and sprinkled into the mud and water

Balsa Foam armature

So having decided to build this rare oddity of WW1 (a French prototype trenchbusting "tank" made of a tractor with a concrete reinforced turret and an extension cord/ power cable that connected it back to its own trenchline.... not hard to believe they only made one eh?) it was time to start cutting styrene and creating forms.

Initially I was struggling a little - I new I could build the general body forms around a skeleton of balsa foam - this material is easy to glue and cut to shape and sandable to give the opportunity to perfect any complex forms or curvature that would be very difficult to build straight away in styrene without the armature.

I also had a brilliant idea about how to create strong armatures for the circular central body forms! I too two rolls of tape and removed excess layers of tape until they were both the same diameter the one was a little tall so i slid it through my bandsaw to shorten it slightly. Once that was done it was a piece of cake to clas the armature in plastic using thin styrene and Bondene solvent glue.

I also formed the concrete "roof" out of balsa foam which I sanded and filed into shape. In order to ensure that it would take paint well and to avoid further damage or distortion I used a foam glue that is more or less a thinned pva. It absorbs into the foam and seals it making it stronger overall in the process.

While that was drying I set about constructing the wheels. I hunted down a couple of plastic lids that were the appropriate diameter and then wrapped them in styrene. While those were drying I started chopping styrene square rod to appropriate lengths for the welded teeth-like of the wheels.

To ensure I got them placed correctly I took an extra copy of my blueprint and a xylene marker - note this is some pretty nasty stuff to be using in hobby projects but it certainly did the job in this case.as it transferred the pattern from the page onto the plastic. From there the spokes an inner supports of the wheels were constructed out of various thicknesses of styrene and adhered with Bondene.
The center Hubs were initially roughed in with Apoxie Sculpt. but i eventually abandoned these in favor of some better representative parts scavenged from another kit.

Around this time I also cut open a Brita water filter and started separating the beads inside by size. Using a tiny awl I began to punch small divots in the plastic body panels and using an old bent airbrush needle as an applicator

I carefully placed a drop of glue on each indent and then adhered a single Brita bead to each spot. It is slow and patient work but a great way to create rivets on a surface like this!

Once the rivets satrted to go on this really took shape and the overall direction became very clear. I mocked up the appropriate forms for the rear roller and supsension and started on the inital assembly. It was really starting to look good IMHO!

I still needed a way to attach the turret to the hull and came up with an incredibly simple solution that would allow me to position it later once I had figured out the model facing and best compositional lines - I simply used more balsa foam inside the turret and body and a plastic tube as a swivel point. A little apoxie sculpt made sure that it wouldn't move . The alignment was perfect.
would grind to a halt.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">Finally, I came across a 1/35 paper model that I could purchase the download for $4 !!! Huzzah! Now it was time to begin scratchbuilding!!!!! Cya next week with details on how :)

So my first Adepticon has come and gone! And it was simply amazing.

People who were there know what I mean - the congratulatory and thankful facebook posts have been rolling through my page filled with tags for seemingly half my friends list, and dozens of people have asked to become my new FB friend.

It was an epic community building event.

That aside, I was in a rather unique position as I was asked to help judge the Crystal Brush painting competition.

This was an incredible honor (and one I sincerely hope to repeat some day) and also a duty that I took very seriously.

I will admit I was rather nervous having to be hyper critical and to give not only my opinion to the other judges (the amazing duo of Angel Giraldez of Luxumbra/Studio Giraldez/Corvis Belli and Jose Nunez Palomares of Big Child Creatives) but also constructive feedback to my peers, many of whom I have known for years. In my opinion, it is sometimes harder to be vigilant and critical with friends than with strangers - and this event was full of friends and artist who I have admired for years. As a lifelong student of the Arts and an art teacher for the last 17 years, however, critique is simply part of the job and understood as a neccesity for growth. I know that there are those who I lean on for important constructive feedback. Dragomir Milanovic whose work I have featured here on several occasions is one such friend that I rely heavily on, and without David Diamondstone's acute critical eye I don't know that I would have been able to push my Boromir bust past the Silver level it attained at GenCon to the Gold it earned in Sword and Brush.

So I judged by the spirit and the letter of the competition. It was exhilarating. Moreso than that it went incredibly smoothly! I couldn't have asked for a better team. Our scores were very uniformly close and showed that we all shared a keen understanding of not only what we were looking at but how we would rank them.

When there was divergence we discussed, but in the end we each scored within a point of another judge on every entry. It was clean and definitive and then handed on to the community to complete the scoring by voting through the website on the incredible photos prepared through the massive efforts of Jennifer Haley.

I am proud of our work and I stand by it.

All of the pieces that were voted upon are available to view at CMON. They were incredible. Many genuinely wonderful creations of form and colour from Raffa, Ben, Sergio, Francesco, Suhre, Kat, etc - so many incredible painters and modelers. By now I'm sure you have seen these or seen them discussed at length. So today I would like to add something else to the discussion, I'd like to mention a few pieces here today that were not the big winners but made a strong impact on me at the event. I have been asked many times now what some of my favorites were -irrespective of score - so here is a list in no particular order of a few entries that resonated with me at Adepticon that you may not have seen yet.....

1. David Diamondstone - The White Orc.
You probably did see this one as it was one of the ones in the running but I decided to include it anyway. One of my favorite pieces in the show and one that I used as an example in discussions throughout the weekend. this piece was a legitimate contender in a stacked category. I have seen and enjoyed this sculpt on the internet many times but this is by far my favorite iteration. The textures in the leather are incredible, the sense of light is subtle and beautiful and the design on the shield is immaculate in its execution. The variety of surfaces depicted is so convincing. I love this piece and will remember it for years to come.

2. Cadwallon by Michael Stubbs - this simple approach to sculpting the background elements was refreshing and just really good! I liked that aspect very much and have filed it away in my memory.....

3. Lauren Fahey (Griffons Roost Painting) - Fade (Kingdom Death) This was a really lovely piece that had beautiful skin tones, solid composition (great use of the vegetation to move the eye around and an interesting way to break up the traditional plinth to create greater interest and movement) and some really great details throughout. Plus the artist was super nice.

4. Cygnar Stormwall - While the finish on it was a dusty drybrushed type of surface that was difficult to take great photos of - the overall impression of this model was excellent. The colour combinations were really cool and the overall level of detail was really great.

5. Monk - mini diorama by Michael Stubbs - Michael again on this list - not because I have known him for years or because I thoroughly enjoy his sense of humor, but rather because his understanding of the "rule of cool" always shines through in his work. He gave a great deal of thought to the overall presentation of this little vignette and the extra details - like the porcelain planters with individual blue glazework designs and the beautiful little koi - are simply cool. I really enjoyed seeing this.

6. Alien Queen - a simple but incredibly effective piece with a HIGH "cool factor". The scene told a clear story and the whole thing was painted very clean. I desperately wish I had a better picture of this! If anyone out there does - I would love to replace this one as it does the little scene zero justice!

7. Zelda - I can save myself - by Seth Walker. Yeah this was up for voting too but i wanted to revisit it because I had a really fantastic critique and discussion with Seth about taking his work to the next level. This led to one of the best parts of the whole weekend for me where he found me a couple hours later in the hallway to show me a new WIP where he was applying the ideas we discussed. It was so clear that he understood and he was so excited that it was truly infectious happyness! I look forward to seeing what comes in the next year from him.....

8. Mordacius Tranquility by Seth Amsden (a different Seth than above!) - the application of painting technique may have been a little oversimplified here but the overall impression was fantastic! I LOVED the composition, the way the natural elements framed the scene and the energy of the rabbit jumping forward - a Kingdom death meets Alice in Wonderland moment to be sure. the sense of dramatic lighting was clever and the whole thing was really really pleasing. Genuinely loved this piece.

Unfortunately there are a few that I really liked that I do not have proper phots of - including Russo's Darth Maul and Mecha entries - But with that being said I do have a few more nice shots to share so I will leave a link for a slide show of some of my shots from across the event here - hope you enjoy as much as I have!

Holy Moly!

I looked at my view count today and realized I am likely to cross the half million mark in the next couple days!

This calls for a small Contest and Prizes!!!!!

So I'm going to make it simple. Comment on this post on my blog (if you are reading this on facebook you will need to click the link to my actual blog). Please tell me one thing you would like to see (or see more of) in the next year on Lost In The Warp!

Thats it :)

Some time next week I will pick comments at random (probably using a number generator). I will then contact those people and send them a lovely little surprise from my shelves of mini stuff! I don't know how many prizes or what yet but I'm sure I can dig up some fun and random things :)

Thanks to everyone who has been kind enough to follow my little corner of the miniverse! Be good to each other!
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Fully funded in minutes and working towards many stretch goals. I have been waiting for some time to see this campaign come together and it looks impressive! I am not an Infinity player but these busts and figures are beautiful - I definitely want to paint one!

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">The sculpts are evocative and characterful. They appear to be exceptionally well sculpted and cast and represent a nice variety of subjects from the Infinity world. Even for those not associated with infinity the characters have great variety to appeal across genres and styles.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Whats more the model stands that have been unlocked are pretty darn cool! I hadn't seen this style of plinth before but I REALLY like the clean aesthetic of them They could be used as display stands or as holders while painting and are priced very well.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">

My incredible boy turns 9 today and this is the first birthday where he will be receiving miniatures from his dad :) A few weeks back, he approached me telling me with great seriousness that he had been working VERY hard on his reading and math. He hoped this would convince me to agree that he was finally ready to learn and try miniature gaming!

He is a genuinely excellent reader, has indeed been working on his math - something which I think the dice and gaming system will only help further!

So Yes. With genuine tears in my eyes I gave him a hug and we got started!

Once we had determined that yes I was indeed willing to support him in this, I went to the books and let him flip through. Unsurprisingly to anyone who knows him, the cyborg steam punk undead legions of Cryx are far and away his choice of army! (Followed by cephalyx and legion).

Specifically He saw Denny3 and the mechanithralls. He turned to me wide eyed and asked "Are these BOTH in the SAME ARMY!!!!!?" And that was that! (Oh and he REALLY wants the Battle engine too.....

Tonight he will open a box of mechanithralls along with a Cryx plushy to take with him to bed - he is still young enough to really appreciate that! - and we have dug through my own collection to see what I already have.

Turns out it was a few things!

I had a the 2 player starter box - so Agathia, Slayer, unit of banes, Reaper, & Deathripper. I also have Deneghra,a Skarlock, 3 or 4 more bone jacks, Deathjack, Aikos 1, a pistol wraith, Skarre2, Cankerworm and an old metal slayer that I bought during mark 1 but never built or played!

Working it through The plan is to build his first list as:

Agathia/Deneghra (*interchangable as the list is 74 points)

Skarlock

Slayer

Deathripper

DeathJack

Reaper

Pistol Wraith

Bane Warriors +UA

6 Mechanithralls w/3 Brute Thralls

Skarlock Commander

Necrosurgeon

Some big mean scary robots and a bunch of undead recursion. He is going to have some great fun!

Still a few things we will have to pick up (the Ua, the Skarlock Commander and the necrosurgeon) but this should become a good base list to learn with. He will also have a few things (like Aikos1, full mechanithrall unit) that he can sub in/out to try as he becomes familiar with the game play.

Next things after the base army - we will likely be looking to Denny3 (maybe as a christmas present) and likely Asphyxious (2 or 3?). If any of my readers are Cryx players and want to chime in on list suggestions we will be happy to hear them - although he has little interest right now in Satyxis despite how good they are in the meta.

My name is Chris Suhre and I’m an amateur hobbyist/painter. This will hopefully be the first in a

long series of blog post on various miniature/hobby topics. (I hope so to! - J)

I thought I’d start off by discussing composition in competitive painting. Hopefully it’s no big surprise that to do well in painting competitions you must have a great grasp of color theory, lighting effects, and painting techniques like blending and such. But having well composed settings can also help you present a much more pleasing ensemble to your viewer.

Have you ever noticed that certain dioramas keep your eye traveling around while others seem scattered? This is due to composition of the setting. This blog post will help discuss some of the elements of composition and how we can use them to reinforce the feeling we want to invoke in our viewer. Composition is not just in miniature painting though. It can also be seen in other art forms as well such as movies and classical painting.

But before we really get started I just wanted to note a few excellent resources for composition. Many of the ideas I will discuss are thanks to these resources. The Rise of Fantasy is an excellent book by Juan Barrena that discusses many of the points I will make in this blog post.

Another great book resource is Modeling Stories in Miniatures by Antonio Fernandez Lizaso. Also, while preparing this article I came across The Art of Composition 140 Iconic shots on Facebook. We will be looking at a few of these iconic scenes in this post. Finally, the online site Massive Voodoo is a library of useful information for any painter/hobbyist.

So, the first area to address is forced composition vs natural composition. In forced composition, we are often lining our model up with the scenery around them in parallel lines. This gives a forced or artificial feel to the piece. This is often what we see in family photos. Everyone is lined up and placed in front of scenery or behind it but not actually interacting with it. Forced composition can work on a display piece but you should realize it will give you a more photographed/posed effect. Natural composition is when there is a lack of parallel lines in a piece. This is more often what we see in dioramas where there is a battle. That doesn’t mean there can’t be good composition within the piece yet. Just that warriors on opposite sides of the battlefield shouldn’t be directly lined up against one another.

This is the Devil Shadow Mutineer’s by the incredibly talented Kat Martin. This is an example of forced composition. Notice how it almost seems like the crew members came out of the bar and then posed for a picture. They are arranged with a back drop that fits the models and scene but they really aren’t interacting with it. Note the parallel lines within the piece. The miniatures backs line up in parallel lines to the bar wall behind them.

Next is balance. In general, we want the final symmetry in a piece to be balanced. What this means is that when the piece is divided in half vertically it should appear to have the same “weight” on both sides. Now this can often be done simply by making sure the same number of items are present on each side. For instance, having a 5 man unit of troops. Having the leader in the middle with 2 troops on either side produces a simple balance/symmetry to the piece. This is also known as perfect balance, when all items are distributed evenly both in quantity and weight between both sides of the piece. There is also balance by equivalence when you have a large item on one side and its visual weight is balanced out by numerous smaller items on the other side. It should also be noted that balance can not only be created by the weight or quantity of items but by color itself. Warm colors (red, yellow, etc) have a higher visual weight than cold colors.

Look back to the Mutineer’s by Kat. The scene can easily be divided down the middle vertically with a member on either side and a balance in weight of the items on each side on the back wall.

Once again notice the symmetry and forced composition in this scene. The items, hues, and light are equal on each side making this a perfect symmetry.

And this one.

Okay so now let’s dive into composition styles/lines. Just a few general notes to start....

First, I often like to have an item in the upper left hand corner of the piece that grabs the eye and then pulls the eye into the piece. This is often something as simple as a tree, rock formation, banner, etc. We typical read from left to right so this helps one grab the viewer’s eye and pull it into the piece.

In my “Into Darkness” diorama I use a ruined stone column to grab the viewer’s eye and then that eye is pulled along the wooden support beam into the first member of the wither shadow combine. In this piece, you may then notice how the first member of the unit then looks in the direction of the second who then looks to the third helping to direct the eye through the entire piece. (orange lines) Another general idea about composition is framing the scene. In this case, we’re talking about using items to help contain the vision we want the viewer to see. Returning to the “Into Darkness” diorama note how the ruined rock column and wooden support beam also help frame and define the edges of the piece. (green lines)

Now that we’ve hit on the ideas of forced vs natural composition and symmetry/balance vs symmetry let’s discuss geometrical types of composition.

These are patterns you can place within your composition to reinforce the importance of an item or enhance the feeling generated by the piece. The first type of composition I’m going to discuss is the Cross. This is probably the easiest form of composition with which to highlight our main character. Simply put there’s a vertical and a horizontal line that run through the piece and these two lines are perpendicular to each other.

So, let’s look at Winter’s Maw. By adjusting the creature’s right leg upward, I could bring the head and hands in a horizontal line with each other. This coupled with the ice shards on the back and the mammoth skull created a cross composition with the lines meeting right over the face drawing the focus to that place. You may also notice how the
trees in the background help frame the piece. I often like doing back drops to my pieces because it helps direct the viewer to what I want as the front of the piece. It helps define the optimal position I feel to look at the piece.

Notice in this screen shot from Jaws how the wife behind Brody and the flat horizon form a cross that draws even more attention to what the director wants you to focus on, Brody’s face.

The second type of geometrical composition I wish to discuss is the Grid.

The grid often works well for arranging multiple figures on a single piece. Essentially, we create an imaginary grid with 2 equally placed parallel horizontal and 2 vertical lines creating 9 sections on the grid. We then work to arrange figures in each box or at the points of intersection between grid lines.
This is also known as the rule of thirds.

Take for example Kith, Kriel, and Kin. If you place an imaginary grid over the diorama you can see how pieces are placed in different sections and at points of intersection. (magenta lines) Also as you look at the piece you notice that a tree is used in the upper left corner to draw one’s attention into the piece. If you draw a vertical line through the piece that the two sides are slightly imbalanced. (green line) The impaler troll has slightly more visual weight than the 2 pygmy trolls on the opposite side. In my opinion this help pull the eye in a short of circular motion around the piece to visualize all the aspects. (orange line)

Here is another example of the grid placement in some famous screen shots.

Next let’s discuss diagonal composition. Diagonal compositions are often dynamic and reinforce the feeling of movement in the piece. This can be made even stronger if you combine with additional forms of composition like the grid. Take for example Borka’s Berserkers. Notice how a diagonal line can be drawn through the Earthborn into Borka and then the Axer. This diagonal line reinforces the feeling of movement or charging that is present with the figures in the piece.

The diagonal composition can also be seen in these to screen shots. Note the sense of
movement in these still images.

The triangle is another form of composition. Our eyes often scan pieces for basic geometric shapes including the triangle. The triangle composition helps guide our eye to all 3 corners of the triangle and placing objects at these intersections can increase their prominence within the piece. The triangle composition can also lend prominence to items within the shape.

I used a triangle arrangement in my Dogs of War piece. (beige lines) The blue line helps
shows the symmetry in the piece.

This is Blood and Flame by Andrew Leung. Note again how Andrew used a triangular composition to guide one’s eye to each member of the Daughters’ of the Flame and then keep the Dire troll within the triangle composition of the piece.

Also, check out these screen shots and how the triangle composition is used to keep your eye scanning over the piece.

The final geometric shape in composition is the diamond. In the diamond we are lead from one strong focal point at the top out to both sides as we scan the piece and then back to a strong focal point at the bottom. I unfortunately don’t have a personal piece of diamond composition I can show now but please look at these screen shots. Note how you start from a strong upper focal point, scan the piece back and forth, and then end at a strong focal point at the bottom.

That covers the basics of composition. But to paraphrase a famous pirate Captain, these are more like guidelines than actual rules.

It’s okay to break the rules but you really need to understand what they are first and why you are breaking them. For instance, you may want to present a desert nomad wandering in a bleak wasteland. In such a circumstance, it may be appropriate to have the nomad on one side of the diorama and the rest be open desert to help symbolize the vastness of the desert and the nomad’s aloneness....

I hope this blog post has laid down the basics of composition in miniature art. Hopefully
this can be applied in your future projects and help you enhance the feeling you wish to convey
with your art. Thanks for reading!
The time worn historically inspired, anime-esque aesthetic is just cool.

Today I am pleased to present a photo SBS of a Ma.K. build by one of my friends Dragomir Milanovic. Readers will have seen him multiple times in this blog (he even has his own label here!) because aside from being a friend, he is one of the finest and most inspiring modeler's I know.

This piece, entitled "Last Prayer", was something the he picked away at over a couple years in between other projects. I think it is absolutely stunning in its final presentation.

Here (in photos) is how it was made:

The face was a bit bland and uninspiring, and Dragomir had a different direction in mind anyway so a new skull was in order....

A new layer of tattered clothing and equally tattered skin really helped to start setting the tone...

After some rough/temporary assembly, Dragomir was able to add damage and wear across the suit.

Then it was into casting and carving the background from plaster, model assembly, primer and under painting. Dragomir was the first person to show me salt weathering several years ago - he is still making great use of it!!! (NOTE: You can click on any of these to see them bigger!)

A bit more detailing work and double checking placements for fit as well as shadow and light and it is nearly done! From here he took the following picture and let it sit for a bit to see if there was anything that required significant change before final touch ups.

Whenever you have the option (ie. you aren't painting the night or minutes leading up to a competition entry deadline....but I mean who does that....riiiiiiiight ;P ) this is a really good practice to be in. It is also at this stage having a couple of really critical friends can make those finishing touches so worthwhile.

The finished piece with light cascading through the window in all its atmospheric glory.

Just awesome!

Back again soon with more cool work (even my own!) to share :)

Working on some new SBS tutorials of my own to share with you all but it has been taking longer than I had hoped, so in the meantime I am posting links to a couple of amazing tutorials that I have come across on Planet Figure - partially to share with you and partially for me to keep track of later!

The first is an article on painting leather boots and other clothing by Grant Gellatly - I cant wait to try this myself - painter friends take note this is DEFINITELY WORTH reading.

The Second is an older but exceptional SBS from my friend Fernando Ruiz. I love the sense of texture in the hat and the wonderful control in the skin.

New England's own "WickedPaintah" Dan Clark completed a conversion so cool that I had to share it forward! (You know how much I love conversions!)

He felt that the horse-drawn tank just wasn't as cool as...well... an ACTUAL TANK! This is a conversion that has been attempted before by modellers with a variety of results - but Dan's is far and away my favorite (and the best executed) that I have seen to date! Here it is "Wicked" paintjob and all:

The conversion was conceptually pretty straightforward but required skill and patience to execute to this level. Step one was to separate the sponsons from the chassis. Dan wrote:
"This was probably the single most critical step, since I needed to preserve all three pieces in good condition. I ordered a .01″ thickness razor saw from Amazon which did the trick wonderfully."
He then filled the resulting holes and smoothed out the surfaces with some milliput and elbow grease making the profiles seamless once more! The sponsons were glued to the Leman Russ treads and any gaps were cleaned up with more Milliput before mounting the whole assembly back onto the chassis.
At this years WTC one incredible Khador force stood out amongst the crowd in ways that could not be ignored. The weathering, the Freehand, the blending were all on point and Mikkel Ernst of Denmark walked away with the Best painted army award. When I saw this impressive and inspiring force I knew I wanted to share it with my audience here at LITW. Mikkel agreed and had this to say:

I started painting when I was like 12-13 years old but just a few regiments of WHFB... I then started painting again 7-8 years ago when I became a dad (I'm 32 now) as it's a really nice relaxation process for me in the evening.

My aim has always been to paint armies rather than single mini's, but I've been considering trying to see what I could do if I spend the time on a single mini instead.

If I should pick an area where I would like to improve and has been wanting to for a long time it would be the metals... I think it got a lot better since I started painting layers of the washes rather than just soaking the area in it... but still...
I think we can agree that the results army wise are seriously impressive and I look forward to seeing if Mikkel really does throw down and go all out on a single competition level mini someday!

Something I would like to share though is that you might have noticed the desaturated/washed out colour levels of the photos from the WTC. I wanted specifically to include these next pictures for my readers sot hat you can see the colours with more clarity and really appreciate the finish:
I included some pictures of my try to do NMM coz I never really learned it and would be awesome with some guidelines as well - and it's me trying a new different style (for me) :)

I really like this NMM look - reminds me of the Rackham aesthetic - which is also the style of NMM that I enjoy painting!
What is next for Mikkel?

Apparently a Cryx army though he is still working out ideas in terms of theme and colour scheme. He says:

"I like colors that pop, but would also like a dark and terrifying feel to it...".

I know that I am definitely looking forward to seeing what he comes up with and wish him all the best with his future work!
Howdy y'all!

I did some super quick paintjobs on a couple of the MK3 Battle Boxes to encourage the kids in my after school club to get excited for Warmahordes. Nothing fancy but they look good from arms length!
Full disclosure: This Gobber tinker is the first serious effort I have made to paint anything in nearly a year. As the incredible Jessica Rich said in last weeks post, you use it or you lose it. The Warjack won't be the only thing showing how rusty it is in this article. After the passing of my mother a year ago I painted up a storm immediately after and then just couldnt bring myself to sit down and focus on it for a long time..... but now?

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "source sans pro" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">People keep asking if I'm back and I haven't really had an answer...But now, yeah, I'm thinkin' I'm back! ~ John Wick

I really wanted to use lighting to give my model a sense of volume and to draw the eye upwards to the gobber himself so I started with priming in black and white - not as a full zenithal lighting but rather as an angled source that draws attention upwards and forwards. I used my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE primer in the world - Badger Stynylrez through my airbrush.
Ended up looking like this :

(3 pics to show the difference in the lighting - just click to enlarge if you want to see better!)

With that established it was time to begin my rust layer - This tinker didn't steal a new warjack after all - it has been bodged together from scrap and leftovers - while it may be "the big score" to someone like him, it still had to look like someone else's junk!

I started with AMMO by Mig Jimenez Dark Tracks and Medium rust to establish rusty tones in the shadows and mid range, switching to VGC Scurfulous Brown for the brightest areas - this really began to show the model's volumes and lighting even more dramatically than the black and white underpainting! I then used P3 Sanguine Base to warm several of the shadow zones particularily towards the front of the model (most of the deepest areas opposite the light source in the back I left the dull brown of the dark tracks over black) and to artistically deepen some zones because it was pleasing to my eye. (Remember you can click any pic if you want to see it larger!)
Once the rust coat was finished I let it dry for 48 hours and then coated it liberally with AMMO by Mig Jimenez Chipping Fluid..... Then the real fun begins! I decided that since I was using a Cygnarian Warjack as the basis of this model I would go with predominantly Blue - a colour I don't get to paint too often and that would relate well to my orange rust tones. I also decided that since I was using a Mercenary jack leg I would do it in Green (P3 Green with VMC Yellow Green) to tie visually into my Merc army and since the goblin himself would be green this would help to create harmony and a stronger overall composition. Red became the spot colour in both a strong VMC Scarlet red and a desaturated red violet made with the P3 Sanguine base.

Well, this is where the fun part actually begins! Once the paint was touch dry I grabbed a larger soft clean synthetic brush and a small container of water with just a drop of running alcohol in it. I used that to rehydrate the surface of the model one or two sections at a time. then using an older rougher brush, a dental flossing brush (also super useful for cleaning your airbrush!) and a couple of pointed implements I was able to quite literally scratch and wear through the coloured paint because of the water soluble Chipping Fluid layer I had applied over the rust and below the colour coats! This exposes the "rust" layer beneath.

(PS if Justin From Secret Weapon Miniatures thinks I need to use his Rust/Weathering paints....lets just say I have heardnothing but good and am more than willing to try them! ;P LOL)

After a bit of work I have this:

Scratched, rusted and worn it now looks more like scrapped parts for a proper tinker! (and doesn't he just look smug up there!) Once the model had dried fully again I dullcoated it to protect my work up to this point and to avoid and further accidental destabilization of the chipping fluid layer.

From there it was the slow painstaking process of highlighting and shadowing the edges of each paint chip and using fine glazes to build up luminosity and refine colour gradients across the major forms of the armour. I also began to develop the metals using a combination of my new Vallejo Metal Colour Burnt Iron (thanks Fernando Ruiz for the lowdown on this stuff - it is great!), DarkStar Miniatures Molten Metals, Forgeworld Dark Iron Pigment, and a pencil.

It is really noteworthy that pencils can be super helpful in weathering - from making fine scratches that are not as exposed as the big rust chips we have done to simply adding a metallic sheen to edges. It is quick, easy and can look amazing - just be brave enough to go for it!

I'm going to leave off here for now because most of the interesting stuff has been done - I did have to go back and paint the goblin, stowage and to work out a few more areas, but the techniques in doing all that are either traditional or have been covered above. I did also break out my AMMO and stardust pigments, AMMO rust washes etc. to accentuate the weathering further - Next week Ill comment on more of the finishing and post this little guy's glamour shots as a completed piece!

If you have any questions about colours, techniques or anything else do not hesitate to ask!

Though geographically distant, her love of great contemporary art, her sense of humor,

and the kindness she has shown me whenever our paths have crossed, marks her as a friend.

Her skill with the brush, daring sense of composition and wondrous ability to think outside the box are what make her an inspiration.
Lost In The Warp was always meant to be not only a vehicle for my work but also a space for friends who do not maintain their own sites to share their own thought, ideas and work.
In the past LITW has featured articles by Vince Hudon, Chris Borer, Dragomir Milanovic, and others. We will see more of this in the coming months with incoming articles from the incredible Chris Suhre and more - But lets focus on this one for now ;)

Something very special here today - Jessica Rich - Brushmistress extraordinaire wrote some of her thoughts about painting a while ago and gave me permission to share it on LostInTheWarp.

Jess is currently taking aim at making some major changes and moving further into the fine arts to pursue her passions. To be quite frank, she could use a hand.
Please consider checking out this link https://www.gofundme.com/amva8wqk and giving some thought as to whether you can get behind this incredible artist in any way :)
Just Paint by Jessica Rich

BEGINNING

This is about painting. This is about beginning. This is the mad ramble of a painter who lost their marbles many many
years ago. If only I could get back to Neverland.

Last month I was part of a google hangout with fellow painters, and the question of "What advice do we have for
beginning painters?" came up. I didn't have a lot to say then, as it's a subject that requires more than just a simple line of
dialogue. There is no magical answer that will lead you down the path of success, no great secret that award winning
artists keep to themselves.

I've met hundreds of painters, some great, and some truly awful. I know that sounds harsh to say, but an honest critique
of someone's work is what I can give you. My word isn't law, and shouldn't be taken as canon, but in my semi-educated
opinion, there are enthusiastic painters out there who want to win awards that don't have a snowball's chance in hell.
Competition is a bitch.

AWARDS

Why do you want to win them? Why do I still take pleasure in winning them? From my perspective, I feel a little warm and
fuzzy, a momentary blip of "I did something right". But then it's gone. My award goes on the shelf to be seldom looked at,
and rarely dusted. They are things I have to posses, like an ugly sweater your grandmother gives you that you're
obligated to wear at least once a year. I'm not unappreciative of these awards, but they are not necessary. I know this.
You should know it as well. The boost of confidence you receive from public validation of your skill will slip away like a
dream upon waking. Don't judge yourself by them, and don't allow them to become all that you, as a painter, are.

INVESTMENT

The question I'm most often asked (by my admittedly infrequent interviewers) is "How long have you been painting?". An
honest answer would be "for as long as I remember", because I count those childhood years, when I was giddy with
excitement to paint with tempera on a piece of newspaper rag using only my fingers and imagination. Professionally, I've
been painting miniatures for a little over 7 years now. I count "professionally" as hired work from studios or avid collectors.
I don't count "I shittily painted this model and sold it on eBay, so I'm a professional". There, said it, that kind of
"propainter" hubris is laughable. Many top level painters are making fun of you in closed door conversations. Does this
viewpoint make me an asshole? It might in your eyes, and I don't care. And here's why...

To be a "great" painter (Great is in dick fingers because I still don't see myself as great) you need to put in the hours. I'm not talking about "I spend a couple of hours twice a week
working on my minis". I'm saying thousands upon thousands of hours - a rough estimate for me over 75,000 to get me
where I am.

That is how dedicated I am to what I'm doing.

That is how dedicated you most likely need to be to land the
studio gigs and high end commissions (There are a few painters that I've met over the years that take to painting competition winning minis like a fish to water, but they're exceptionally rare). But I would caution, strongly, against this kind of maniacal drive, unless you're
100% sure it's what you want. Because...
Studio work killed my passion. After endless "Ermagerd I need this NOW!!!" deadlines, picky customers, and countless
unpaid hours trying to get things just right because "the client hates it as it is", I started to look at my table in disgust. It
was work. It may wind up being work for you too, and if you're very very lucky, you won't fall out of love with this industry.
I'm still painting miniatures, but it's down to 20-30 hours a week these days, and sometimes it's a Sisyphus level uphill
climb even though it's a mini I thought I wanted to paint.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

Remember those 75,000 hours of time invested? Over the course of that time, my hands and eyes became trained to do what I wanted them to. I didn’t start out with smooth blends, nor was I a freehand wizard. NMM? Sorcery I couldn’t wrap my brain around. But I kept pushing myself further. You have to attempt something before you can fail at it. And you will. I certainly did, and sometimes still do. But it’s ok that’s why I have acetone.

Upon reflection, I realized that the more time I put in to painting, the need to concentrate on the techniques I was using lessened, and what was required of my body to achieve a desired effect became second nature. I no longer constantly struggled to paint buttons on a coat, or eyes on faces. I didn’t have to think about it, because my hands understood the signals my brain sent out. Muscle memory. You won’t have to focus on what angle you’re holding a brush at, or what overall physical posture best suits a technique, because your brain and body will work in concert with each other.

There are 5 photos below (nope - I erased them somehow by accident - Ill add them back in as soon as I can ~ JC), showing the evolution of my freehand over 14 years, in sequential order. 14 years ago, 8 years ago, 5 years ago, 1 year ago, and and few months ago. To put the pictures in perspective, the city on that skirt is a little over ¼” tall, which could fit inside one of the cogs on the Skaven banner. Via determination and practice, my skills advanced. Yours will too. Persevere, and don’t be afraid. I know it can feel intimidating. So you utterly bomb on a figure. It’s alright. But if you stop there, if you reach a point where you say “meh, that’ll do and I don’t need to try anything else”, you won’t get better.

This is also a use it or lose it venture folks. You can’t go full tilt for years, take a year off, and pick right back up. Most of the fundamentals will be there, but your body will have forgotten the precise control. I used to practice karate there’s no way in hell my body could fluidly perform a kata if I tried today. Because I didn’t keep at it.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Brushes: When I bought my first Windsor Newton Series 7 brush, I thought I had acquired the magic bean that would elevate me to the clouds. But then came DaVinci brushes, Raphael brushes, GW brushes you get the point it's a long list of companies. And some work for some, and others work for others. My preference is Rosemary and Company Series 33, Size 0. But that's because it fits my "style" of painting. I paint many glazed layers to achieve my blends. If you aren't doing that, it won't feel the same to you.

Paints: The same notion that there is no "one size fits all" is true for paint. I prefer Reaper Master Series, and Secret Weapon paints. Again, they fit my style. I'm not a huge airbrush user (because I apparently love doing shit the hard way), so I don't have any need to find the perfect paints to push through one. Both of companies' paints I use are perfectly suitable for airbrushing as long as you dilute them, but I know people that adore Minitaire paints, or Vallejo Air. It works for them. Buy a couple of paints from each of the major companies, and see what consistencies you like using. You'll
probably find that some companies make your favorite reds, and another your favorite blues. There's nothing wrong with that, and it doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong if you're not a brand loyalist. In closing on paints, please, don't fall prey to labels on the bottles. Secret Weapon has a fabulous 6 paint series for rust. I've only used them for rust once.

Palettes: Find what works for you (I really hope you're catching on to the trend here). I see so many eager painters buying the palettes their favorite painter uses, because their favorite painter uses it.That's kind of a no-no. You don't know "how" you paint yet, so don't shoehorn yourself into something you are uncomfortable working with because your idol does. Marike uses a ceramic well palette, I use a wet palette. Neither of us are "right". Give everything a try. Start with a
plastic well palette it's a $1 investment. You might love it. My first Golden Demon awards were won using one of those suckers as my paint holder. My wet palette is a 50 cent plastic trading card box with a soaked paper towel and parchment paper.

TERMINOLOGY
*Beats head against wall*. I stay off of forums because of artistic terminology. I could crush skulls over this subject. The two biggest contenders in this arena of stupid arguments are "Glazing" and "Washing".

Glazing: A thin, transparent layer of paint which allows the color beneath it to show through. ANY paint can be a glaze.JUST THIN IT WITH WATER. I don't use mediums other than water because it messes with my consistency. Doesn't mean you can't. As long as it's transparent, it's a glaze. You can make a glaze with ink. You can make a glaze with oil paints and linseed oil (from which the artist term was originally pulled). You can glaze with metallic paint. Again, A GLAZE IS JUST A THIN LAYER OF TRANSPARENT PAINT.

Washing: This term doesn't even belong in miniature painting. We rarely use solvents. But, at it's core, it's the same f'ing thing as glazing. Traditionally, inks are mixed with solvents, then controlled application is used by applying the ink with a loaded (read sopping wet) brush. But because you can wash with acrylics and oils, it's still f'ing glazing.

Loaded Brush: Don't get me started. It's a long story.

Dipping: DON'T DO IT! "But what about Future Wax?" someone is crying. If you're reading this, I'm assuming you're hoping to take away some useful tips from this mad ramble. If someone suggests Future Wax as an additive, run away.

What I'm trying to get across in this segment is that it's all painting in one form or another (except Future Wax). We are artists. Would you like to art as well? You can art if start with a brush, paint, and a model. Try it. Throw the terms out the window, and see what you like to do.

A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN ENTERING INTO THIS FIELD

Paint what you like to paint.

If you ask for a critique, be prepared to take what you're told in a positive light (even if it sounds like someone is cutting your soul into tiny bitesized nibblets).

Listen to the people you are asking for advice, but don't change everything you're doing because of said advice.

Incorporate it into your style.

Painting competitions can hurt. Not everyone can win, but it doesn't mean you should stop painting if you didn't take home a thingy, especially if you enjoy painting.

Remember that opinions are like assholes.

IN CLOSING
The very best advice I can give is to simply "start".

My Best Regards,
Jess

So Im going to start by giving away the end of the story...

I built a Privateer Press Gobber Tinker model and took it to the always AMAZING Sword And Brush competition in Toronto this past weekend and won this year's theme award "Best Orc or Goblin" sponsored by the awesome folks at Big Child Creatives.

I had a wonderful day meeting up with friends, helping to judge many of the categories and just seeing a Tonne of fantastic work.

Special Shout out to David Faust Du Sablon who took both Peoples Choice and Judges Choice Best In Show Awards!

So now that you know how it all ends - lets see how It started. As many of my readers are aware I LOVE to make things.... MUCH moreso than to paint them. I have shown my many troll conversions over the past months but have as of yet to settle on a paint scheme to finish them all. In fact following the painting of Boromir and my Prototype WW1 tank last fall that I powered through in the wake of my mothers passing - I have found it incredibly difficult to sustain any painting and have completed almost nothing for a year now. I really needed to get back on the right path so this summer I quickly painted a couple of pieces for demoing the new MK3 Warmachine edition and taught a class in painting at a store. With these baby steps behind me it was time to dive back in properly and with the Sword and Brush I had a clear (albeit short) deadline to meet. So I figured I might as well take on the theme piece for the year and went rummaging through my hobby room where I found the Tinker! A useful enough piece in the game and a characterful little guy I still know I would have to do something significant to elevate him to a competition worthy piece though......
That's when I remembered this little piece of art that I had seen in a No Quarter Magazine some time back.

I know I couldn't fit all of that on a medium base to stay game legal, but I figured that the inspiration could lead me down an interesting path! So I started by buying a second hand Cygnar Jack and chopping it up! I also grabbed an extra Rover I had and stole a leg from it.... to add to the cobbled together vision! (click on any pic to see it larger BTW)

I originally cut the gobber in half to sit him down to drive but then I had a great idea while watching Pacific Rim - and I immediately glued the gobber back together and patched him with some putty so that he could command while standing atop the 'Jack! I made sure to include all the key identifiable parts of the gobber model - the cart the scrap even the handles, basically I just left off the wheels and went from there! I added some brass etch details from Etch Master (wonderful products!!!!) and built new hips and arm stumps and supports for the scrap bin from styrene, wire and a couple of plastic Grandt Line Rivets.

A copper wire made for the top part of the pedal assembly with a random Tamiya bit supporting below. A Tamiya tow chain, some plastic distressed to look like wood, a bit of brass tubing, brass mesh, some Forgeworld brass barbed wire, some gears and hoses from DragonForge Design, and a chop/reposition of the gobbers arms gave me this Franken-monstrosity!
