One "Wicked" Khador Gun Carriage

New England's own "WickedPaintah" Dan Clark completed a conversion so cool that I had to share it forward! (You know how much I love conversions!)

He felt that the horse-drawn tank just wasn't as cool as...well... an ACTUAL TANK! This is a conversion that has been attempted before by modellers with a variety of results - but Dan's is far and away my favorite (and the best executed) that I have seen to date! Here it is "Wicked" paintjob and all:

The conversion was conceptually pretty straightforward but required skill and patience to execute to this level.  Step one was to separate the sponsons from the chassis.  Dan wrote:

"This was probably the single most critical step, since I needed to preserve all three pieces in good condition.  I ordered a .01″ thickness razor saw from Amazon which did the trick wonderfully."

He then filled the resulting holes and smoothed out the surfaces with some milliput and elbow grease making the profiles seamless once more!  The sponsons were glued to the Leman Russ treads and any gaps were cleaned up with more Milliput before mounting the whole assembly back onto the chassis.

Finishing touches include toothpaste tube caps as smoke stacks and trench basing details including several crushed Cygnarians! Overall a cool and evocative conversion finished brilliantly by one WickedPaintah!

The Great Green Motherland Machines of Mikkel Ernst

At this years WTC one incredible Khador force stood out amongst the crowd in ways that could not be ignored. The weathering, the Freehand, the blending were all on point and Mikkel Ernst of Denmark walked away with the Best painted army award. When I saw this impressive and inspiring force I knew I wanted to share it with my audience here at LITW.  Mikkel agreed and had this to say:

I started painting when I was like 12-13 years old but just a few regiments of WHFB... I then started painting again 7-8 years ago when I became a dad (I'm 32 now) as it's a really nice relaxation process for me in the evening.

My aim has always been to paint armies rather than single mini's, but I've been considering trying to see what I could do if I spend the time on a single mini instead.

If I should pick an area where I would like to improve and has been wanting to for a long time it would be the metals... I think it got a lot better since I started painting layers of the washes rather than just soaking the area in it... but still...

For a FIRST ATTEMPT at freehand....I think Vlad turned out alright ;P

I think we can agree that the results army wise are seriously impressive and I look forward to seeing if Mikkel really does throw down and go all out on a single competition level mini someday!

Something I would like to share though is that you might have noticed the desaturated/washed out colour levels of the photos from the WTC.  I wanted specifically to include these next pictures for my readers sot hat you can see the colours with more clarity and really appreciate the finish:

He was also kind enough to include a few WIP pics giving a brief glimpse into his recent explorations and approach to teaching himself NMM!

I included some pictures of my try to do NMM coz I never really learned it and would be awesome with some guidelines as well - and it's me trying a new different style (for me) :)

I really like this NMM look - reminds me of the Rackham aesthetic - which is also the style of  NMM that I enjoy painting!

Congrats Mikkel!

What is next for Mikkel?

Apparently a Cryx army though he is still working out ideas in terms of theme and colour scheme. He says:

"I like colors that pop, but would also like a dark and terrifying feel to it...".

I know that I am definitely looking forward to seeing what he comes up with and wish him all the best with his future work!

Play it Painted: NEW BATTLEBOXES FOR THE CLUB!

Howdy y'all!

I did some super quick paintjobs on a couple of the MK3 Battle Boxes to encourage the kids in my after school club to get excited for Warmahordes. Nothing fancy but they look good from arms length!

More Play It Paitned tabletop level stuff coming soon! LMK if you like seeing these as well and if you have any questions!

{T}Rolling Along - Long Riders come up short......

When I decided to pick up a small Trollblood force (HA! I should have known better...my friend Erik and I now own almost the entire faction worth of models between us) one of the units that enticed me to make this leap was the Long Rider Cavalry. Even before I knew the rules the idea of a fast crushing cavalry unit of mounted Trollkin just really appealed to me - so I decided to buy them.

Holy crap they are an expensive unit - Over $100 even before Horthol! But..... they were so cool, and I heard the rules for them were also awesome - Totally going to be worth it anyway. Right?
So I dove in!

.... And then I opened the box to begin the assembly.....

Oh Crap.

Seriously - what a load of crap.

I was flabbergasted - these were some of the worst fitting models I have ever built - and I built that jacked up P.O.S. Forgeworld Thunderbolt where I had to completely rebuild the wing mounts and whole sections of the body......Ok maybe a they weren't quite as bad as that....

And it turned out ok in the end....... ;)
For the price of a colossal or gargantuan, I think this little unit of models should have almost assembled themselves. Instead they had ENORMOUS gaps. No two halves fit properly - not a single pair out of 6. The Molding lines were a real pain and a couple of the parts required a significant amount of filing, grinding and/or filling because one side of the cast or mold line was lower than the other.
Bad as it is, this picture does not show the true extent problems faced by belly halves that required major filing/dremelling to even out or the poor fit and finish of the riders. I can only hope that I had a particularly bad batch and that this is not the usual situation faced by people with these models....
In the end I used apoxie sculpt and resculpted the center section of each model. Hair textures and straps, some armour plates. It was a lot of work to be honest and took all impetus I had to complete this unit and flushed it away. They have sat unfinished for about a year now. I have played them riderless in friendly games to get a feel for them several times, but still they have sat unfinished.

Longrider by Bakaryu
What is more, the last year has seen many changes in the Trollblood line - notably many larger proportioned figures - making these older long riders look a little puny by comparison.... Mind you I really like mixing older and newer sculpts - showing a populace of varied height and size, Also it makes sense that the absolute biggest trollkin would be less likely to be mounted and massively weighing down their rides..... that seems more a job for somewhat slighter kin. So I took another look at these models, and realized that the biggest and least fun part of the job (basic assembly)  was already done.

Whats more, when I saw the cool Bear mounted versions by bakaryu on the pp forums I could feel my interest rising once more. As I got into the swing of things converting my Highwaymen and 2 Fire Eater Units, I knew I was finally ready to revisit the toughalows! The PP insider discussing Longriders as being the most powerful cavalry unit in MK3 sealed the deal. Time to level up the Longriders!

Much more impressive!
So what could I do to make these models better. I initially thought of swapping the upper body of some of the models but was unconvinced that the legs would look right under one of the plastic torsos - so instead I decided to find ways to add a bit of added bulk and some character to the existing riders. The first idea that stuck was to upgrade their shields. The ones that came with the Warders are super cool and much larger than the little target bucklers carried by the riders (and old kriel warriors) - they would certainly add some bulk to the profile! I had an unbuilt box of Warders (since the nerf I was in less of a rush to build another unit anyway!) but felt that I might want to use these awesome shields in multiple places and applications so I broke out my CMON Instant Mold and made a press mold of the shield I liked best. Soon enough I had a full set for the unit and with only a smidge more work added some unique battle damage and amulets/trophies to some of them to differentiate. I used the actual plastic one on the unit leader because you can clearly see the inside of the shield and my press molded shields are really best seen from the front. I also replaced the heads of a couple of the riders with armored helmets from my bits box (from Boomhowlers unit IIRC)

In breaking out my box of warders I was reminded of something else that I had squirreled away for a conversion! You see - my first warder unit had already been filled with characterful tweaks and weapon swaps, and when I had planned to run two - I had also planned a little something for the second group. Whereas the first unit had all gone for hammers and bludgeoning weapons, I had planned the second squad to have all axes....not just any style of axe though - ones that would command a little respect and attention. As such, I happened to have nearly a squads worth of "Lola"'s ready to use! The iconic axe of the Butcher in each of his incarnations is just such a cool and brutal design! It would have served the warders well - but I think it will be even better utilized to replace the small but ridiculously powerful "Cavalry Axe" carried by each long rider! Also with the Warders are some really cool armoured skirt/thigh pieces. Horthol the Longrider character also has these but the regular riders don't..... A couple more press molds and bingo I have matching leg armour to bulk up the riders that little bit more!

Oh yes this is getting much better! Now that the riders are looking a little bulkier, I decided to add a bit more armour and detail to the toughalows. Once again I grabbed my Instant Mold - this time one that I had previously pressed of the Bouncer's shield when I was making the shoulder pad for Frank (my Dire Troll Bomber). This time I only filled the center of the shield with putty to create a smaller but still really cool looking plate. I also grabbed some of the smaller shields I had and played around with fitting them as additional plating for the mounts. A few extra pieces of stowage/kit and they really started to look great!

So a year on, I finally found the inspiration and impetus to build my longriders... But what of their fearless leader Horthol?  To see what I have done with him, and the rest of the (now mostly finished) unit - I reserve the right to a couple more tweaks and surprises!- you will have to check back next week!

A Kindred Spirit in the Chop Shop!

If you have been enjoying my little updates on converting my troll models you will probably love this post!

If you want to do an Epic Troll conversion first you have to remove the head....My friend Ruin here will show you how!

Kommandant Sanders gonna need a
big bucket for this Chicken!
In the spirit of all the conversions I've been showing recently, I thought I would take the chance to point you at one of my favorite blogs about converting and making super cool Warmachine models.  Tom Mennes build incredibly cool armies with a great flair for super dramatic conversion work (which he follows up with really solid paint in really personal and creative schemes). His output is equally impressive given the quality of the work.

Fun models - dramatic poses, and great creative work. I'm watching this one and hope you will too! Definitely worth reading back through his posts as well!!!!!!! LOTS of great tips and Step by step builds!

His Khador army is full of really creative conversions and I absolutely LOVE his paint scheme. Supurb techniques and great unity mean that even with the wild conversions everything is identifiable, cool and harmonious. So well handled. Most of his work is converted - using plastic stock, tubing and a little greenstuff - but really isn't beyond the realm of others to learn from and attempt on their own. He is really good at showing key steps and materials and explaining his process from concept to creation.

Robo Seraph with Gatling Blight.... AWWW YEAH!
His Everblight army is one of the craziest full army conversions I have seen in Warmahordes. It is simply brilliant! And the paint style on it makes me REALLY want to paint my trolls all in moonlight and glow.... This guys plays to the rule of cool and defys expectations - but always keeps opponents, recognition and playability in mind. A true kindred spirit, I hope I get to meet him at some point because I can think of few armies anywhere or in any game that I would rather see across the table from me.Keep up the amazing work Tom!

Conquest!

So I spent today hanging out with my friend Erik. You may have seen some posts of models I have painted for him in the past including Harkevich, Sorcha in White and most recently his Gun carriage. Well... Today I just sat down and knocked this out:

Sorry the phone pics arent awesome - Ill do a proper photo shoot with it someday soon(ish)

I used Vallejo Air metallics for the first time and they sprayed really well. I also used the Ammo Of Mig Acrylic thinner for the first time in my airbrush - HOLY GEEZ why did it take me so long to try this! I dont think I have ever had paints go through my airbrush this easily and without clogging - quick rinse colour changes, hours of spraying, brushes set aside and not a single problem. Pretty neat!

Colours:
Black primer, p3 bloodstone & Khador red, Vallejo Air Ferrari Red, Bronze, Steel &Nato Black

Not going to win any major awards but looks pretty darn cool for an afternoon of work! :) Erik is pleased and I look forward to seeing this fully finished.
